SKAGERRAK

Navigating the Kattegat

We actually thought we were going to the Baltic on this trip, but it turns out that the Baltic doesn’t even start until you pass through the Danish Belts and Sounds outside København. These photos are evenly distributed between the North Sea, the Skagerrak, and the Kattegat–the three massive seas that envelope the Jutland peninsula in a sometimes brilliant, sometimes gloomy, occasionally terrifying soup of frigid salt water. That water, along with the thinning of the northern atmosphere and a general lack of dust and pollution, tends to bring out the blue in the atmosphere. That blue induces a sense of clarity in the human eye and an ethereal cast in the camera lens.
