PASSAGES

Bridge to Notre Dame

Google defines the word “passage” as “the act or process of moving through, under, over, or past something on the way from one place to another.” The key properties are movement and change, two of the great constants of human life. Somehow, in some miniscule way, we expect the other side to be different—either that, or we expect ourselves to be a tiny bit changed when we emerge.

Passages make a great photography subject, with all their contrasts of light and dark, solid and insubstantial, closed and open. Here are 11 of our favorites.
