For years, København has been ranked the coolest city on the planet and the international city with the highest quality of life. Smart urban and environmental planning with open spaces, safe, clean streets, cyclist- and pedestrian-friendly byways, widespread accessibility, loads of culture, and all kinds of restaurants. All of this comes at a high cost of living, but two million residents and five times as many tourists happily pay up every year. We’ve seen places that are both friendlier and/or more exciting, but sensibility and stability do have an appeal. And there’s no question that the city’s favorite mermaid, Den Lille Havfrue (modeled in 1909 on the ballerina Ellen Price by the sculptor Edvard Eriksen for Carl Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg) is the coolest city symbol anywhere.
